ERS focusses on impactful empirical and conceptual research that builds, challenges, or extends our theoretical understanding of contemporary challenges in the field of logistics and supply chain management.
This year’s theme “Rethinking Supply Chains” calls for research that is extending our knowledge by providing novel perspectives across the different aspects of Supply Chain Management.
Potential topics of interest for ERS include:
Sustainability and ethics issues in logistics and supply chain management
IT and digitalization within supply chains
Supply chain learning and innovation
Distribution strategies and online/omni-channel retailing
Logistics service providers: strategy, structure and relationships
Moving from linear to circular value systems
Development and implications of logistics clusters in Europe
Barriers and facilitators of supply chain collaboration, integration, and alignment
Coping with complexity, uncertainty, and risk in global supply chains
Transparency/visibility in supply chains
The “human factor” in logistics and SCM
This list is not exclusive and other topics – especially forward thinking and innovative topics – relating to logistics and SCM are welcomed.
Four different submission formats are available. Once your submission has been accepted, we will provide you with the details regarding the on-line presentation at ERS 2021.

Full papers submitted to the seminar will be reviewed for potential publication in a globally recognized academic journal and will be subjected to a double-blind review process by a board of international reviewers.
The authors can self-select between the Journal of Business Logistics (JBL) and the International Journal of Logistics Management (IJLM) depending on personal preferences and fit of the manuscript to the mission of the respective journal. The process for JBL will be managed by its European Editors, Professors Wallenburg and Wieland. The process for IJLM will be managed by its Editor, Professor Gammelgaard.
Authors of full papers accepted for ERS will be asked to present the paper at the European Research Seminar. Presentation is a precondition for possible publication in either of the two journals.
Full papers need to be submitted via the online submission platform of JBL or IJLM. Please make sure to specify in your cover letter that the paper is intended for ERS 2021. In addition, you need to send the title page and the manuscript to firstname.lastname@example.org in order for us to make sure that the paper is actually allocated to ERS by the journals.
Conference papers present work-in-progress research. They will be reviewed for their potential to eventually be published in a top logistics/SCM journal. They are papers that report on high quality research that is not yet finished as certain steps in the research process are still to be carried out (e.g., the data collection is still missing).
Text body of conference papers must not exceed 5,000 words with special attention given to contribution–length ratio. The paper should be written according to the JBL style guide/template and needs to an abstract of max. 200 words.

Research ideas outline forward thinking research ideas that the presenters plan to carry out. The objective is to receive feedback to novel perspectives in the stages of idea development and idea refinement to create high impact research. Research ideas are submitted via a 2-3 page outline.

To facilitate open interaction and discussion, a special feature of the ERS are 60 to 90 minutes time slots dedicated to discussing topics of high relevance.
The aim of these sessions is to focus on topics that are of high relevance for academia and/or the future development of the discipline; these topics should address new academic areas and/or exploit new methods. The content could relate to the future of a current research stream, a new research call, a new hypothesis and/or an innovative research or teaching approach etc. In the traditional conference format, these forums would take the form of a workshop, interactive debate, mini-presentations, or any other format that helps to encourage and facilitate interaction and discussions among the participants.
We invite scholars to submit a discussion proposal that includes but is not limited to:
Topic description focusing on the way it brings innovative thinking to the discipline (e.g. perspectives, areas and/or methods)
Large audience appeal, i.e. a topic of broad interest in the area of logistics/SCM
Based on unique insights or data as well as references to papers (including work in progress) or other related material that relate to the topic
A suggestion of a digital format of the session (i.e. your ideas how you could set up the discussion in the virtual space)
Learning outcomes/insights for the discussion participants
The discussion topic proposal should be a brief description of the above. You are encouraged to coordinate the contents of a discussion topic proposal with other researchers and come up with a joint proposal that includes digital interaction from different scholars. These proposals will be evaluated by the ERS scientific board with the objective to select topics and formats that will be highly interesting and valuable for the participants of ERS.
